Sir, you have to have an Internet Service Provider (ISP)
This can be Via modem (Dial Up), Cable DSL, or Satellite.

Today, most ISP services provide the modem required to make the service available in your home.

You just contract an ISP and buy a wireless router and a wireless network card for your computer, READ the users guide and follow the instructions.

You should not have to be concerned with IP address or MAC address.

You have no control over the ISP DHCP configuration.

Even though I am a medical doctor, I get a lot of requests from friends and family who know absolutely nothing about computers to help set up or troubleshoot their home networks, especially their wireless networks. I am not a computer guru, I just know how to follow instructions and understand enough terminology to get by, and I am pretty successful at this.

An employee where I work needs me to put security on her family's wireless connection. She says that they have a Linksys router, some sort of Linksys ethernet bridge for their X-box, and a PC that connects wirelessly. They also happen to live near a bunch of college students, and their internet speed drops off tremendously when the students get out of bed.

I know how to set up security, but I am curious to know if the wardrivers are causing their problems. How can I tell how many people are logging on to their wireless connection? I think this might be possible to see in the router's configuration webpage, but am not sure.

Dont waist your time on tring to figure out how many, just secure the network. There are many many forums and articals and support doc on line to explain this.

But you are opening a can of worms. Every device and computer on that network will all have to be configured with the same security settings as the router. That is why people pay me to service them. It is a big pain and many varibles can come into play. So a volunteered assistance may net you a lot of head ache, because it may all get complicated fast.

But I am sure all the students thank them for the free internet. Each port on a router can service 256 PCs at once.

well, from your modem you need to get a wireless router or access point.

i'd say so you don't have to set up the extra stuff you should get an access point. you plus the cat5 cable coming from your (im guessing dsl modem?) into your acess point. you should have a wifi signal coming from that access point. from that ap you need to log in to it by conneting onto its factor wifi network and type in the ip address given to you by the manual and then use the factory defaulted user name and password to configure it. for the most part you don't need to to do the extra stuff, BUT, you should protect your network

Service provider provides internet connection through Ethernet PPPoE and wired connectrion was terminated to my desktop PC’s network card. Now i have bought Laptop and want to connect to internet using wireless connection with same protocol and provider. how to set up the LAN?

From your description, I am assuming you have a direct ethernet connection from an RJ45 connection in a jack in the wall. If this is the case, then you would just need to purchase a wireless router (linksys, D-link, netgear, etc). Connect the ethernet connection from the wall to the routers internet or WAN port. You will need to access the routers firmware configuration and set it to connect with PPPoE, so get your username and password from your ISP if you are not sure what it is.

You will be able to continue to have the PC plug into the router with an ethernet cable, and then run the laptop with a wireless connection, just be sure to configure the laptop with the security key if applicable.

If you were using a software PPPoE connection on your PC, quit using it. Just set your network adapters on both computers to DHCP, and you should be good to go.
