I got my first wireless laptop a few days ago. I do not have a wireless internet connection but am able to connect to the internet via an unsecure network. What exactly does that mean? If I try to access my email will people be able to more easliy access my password. Please explain as I am new to this. Also, why is it that I can just connect to a network without any service? Will I be visible as a computer on the network I am linked to?

You don't have to worry TOO much… I mean, I wouldn't go doing massive bandwidth sucking downloads either… You're on your neighbor's wireless router. You probably notice that at one area of your house/apartment you can get good signal? The service you're getting is free for you, but is being paid for by that neighbor. If you don't care, then keep using it. They probably won't even notice.

You're on an unsecured network meaning there is NO encryption of your wireless internet traffic. This means if some super intelligent person gets ahold of that traffic (within 30 - 40 feet of you) that means they'll be able to see the info you have going across. The odds of this being a problem for a home user is not really that great. Why? No one cares. You don't have enough info that someone could find useful. Wireless infrastructures at large companies will be hacked 16,000 more than you will use your neighbor's wireless connection.

I have a laptop and a cable iternet connection with a modem. How can i make them wireless? What do i need to buy to make it so i dont have to have my laptop connected to the modem?

You may purchase a wireless router, of which you want to make sure that if your card is b or g, that you buy a router that supports what is already built into your laptop, otherwise you will need a wireless network card. Eitherway you go, a direct connection, will ALWAYS give you the fastest and best connection because wireless, at the moment, is impacted by walls, objects in between, other wireless devices (especially those handy dandy 2.4 Ghz phones or your kid's RC car that you bought em last christmas that they only use when you seem to be on the internet), and possibly even distance. Try it out, and if any problems persist, contact your provider, as they should be able to set you up…and if not, find a new provider and they'll set you up completely free, with modem/router/network card, etc…initially…IF they are reputable provider…
Once you get your router, your WIRELESS NETWORK NAME or SSID is needed as well as your WEP KEY or WIRELESS NETWORK KEY. and when you connect to the internet wirelessly, you will be prompted for those two bits of information…also, it is HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommmended that you use WINDOWS' own wireless manager as anything else will conflict with WINDOWS' and you may get disconnected randomly from time to time… XP you have to go to "RUN-> Services.msc-> Wireless zero configuration" and then set everything to restart the service and make sure you press it to start once you make the changes

I have just bought a new laptop and wireless starter kit. After installing the router, the internet connection will only work when the ethernet cable is connected between the router and the laptop. I have a wireless LAN switch on the laptop which is on. Why wont the wireless connection work without the ethernet cable. Do I need a wireless card or something? Any help would be appreciated as I have no idea what I'm doing! Thanks.

if its not connecting at all,reboot and go into you wireless settings. there should be an icon on your taskbar on the right of a computer with a red x. right click it and choose connect to wireless network. if your network isnt shown click the refresh button. if it still isnt shown you know the problem is with the wireless router. make sure youre settings on it allow wireless connections. then unplug both the modem and router for about a minute to let them reset. then plug them back in router first.
